Granada witnessed yesterday one of the largest demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people ever held in the city. Around 4,000 people, according to the National Police, marched through the city center to demand an end to the “genocide” against Palestine and to denounce the inaction of the international community.

The march, organized by the Global Movement To Gaza along with solidarity groups from Granada, set off from Plaza Nueva and advanced with Palestinian flags, banners, and chants until reaching the Nasrid bridge over the Genil River, where the final acts took place.

A giant flag over the river

At this point, protesters unfurled a huge Palestinian flag, alongside a torn one symbolizing the suffering of the Palestinian people. The gesture was accompanied by a performance in which paper-boat-like vessels were set afloat on the Genil, evoking the humanitarian flotilla that has been sailing toward Gaza since September 1 and which could be intercepted by Israel.

Chants and demands

Throughout the march, chants such as “This is not a war, it’s genocide,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and “Where are the sanctions on Israel?” echoed through the streets. The atmosphere was marked by emotion and sharp criticism of the lack of strong action from European governments.

Calls for urgent measures

The protest concluded with the reading of a manifesto in which organizers demanded an arms embargo and the suspension of trade relations with Israel, calling these urgent steps necessary to pressure the Israeli government and stop the violence.

A symbolic date

The demonstration also coincided with the first anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of Resolution A/ES-10/L.31, which urged Israel to end its presence in occupied Palestinian territory.

Granada thus joined other European cities that also hosted mass mobilizations in defense of Palestine, in a context marked by intensified attacks on Gaza and the ongoing blockade of humanitarian aid.
