The protest group “Say ¡NO! on the Costa Tropical”, formed by residents of the Costa Tropical, has called for a protest in Torrenueva Costa on August 23rd at 11:00 AM. The march will start at the Peñón de Jolúcar and end at the town hall, in opposition to the “La Pinta” and “Albaicín” wind farm projects.
These projects, published by the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and currently in the public consultation phase, involve the installation of 165 wind turbines, each 271 meters tall, located 7 kilometers from the Sacratif lighthouse. The turbines, visible from Almerimar to Torrox, have sparked significant opposition from the community due to concerns about their environmental and economic impact.
From April onward, with heightened efforts over the summer, the group has carried out extensive information drives and collected signatures in opposition to these projects. Residents fear that the installation of the turbines could cause irreversible damage to the coastal landscape, marine life, and crucial sectors such as tourism and fishing. They also point out that the cliffs and seabeds of Calahonda-Castell de Ferro, an area of community interest included in the Natura 2000 Network, would be severely affected. The platform further warns of pollution from waste during construction and natural deterioration of the installations once operational.
The protest on August 23rd aims to highlight the issue and persuade the authorities to reconsider implementing projects that, according to the organizers, could jeopardize the future of the Costa Tropical.
