The National Police have launched an investigation following a theft inside the Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación in central Motril, where several pieces of jewelry and valuable sacred items belonging to the image of La Virgen del Valle were stolen.
The incident occurred over the weekend. According to preliminary findings, the perpetrators likely took advantage of scaffolding erected on the exterior of the historic church for ongoing restoration work to gain entry through the upper levels and reach the vestments and treasures of the Real Hermandad de la Vera Cruz.
Members of the brotherhood’s board of directors expressed their deep sorrow and outrage over the theft, emphasizing the immense sentimental, devotional, and historical value the items hold for the brotherhood and local worshipers. Police investigations remain open to identify those responsible and recover the stolen heritage.
